Colors are the most important choice when building your quilt. Getting the wrong color sets could really make you seem uncool to all your hiking buddies and you potentially could be laughed out of your campsite. To help you seem more awesome to your friends, here are some general tips and info about the great colors Enlightened Equipment offers.
Our colors also help determine the fabrics you choose on our site. We have nine 10D fabric colors and seven 20D fabric colors. No 10D colors looks exactly the same as any 20D colors, however we do have several that are close. Typically the 20D colors are lighter, where the 10D colors are darker, but have a shine to them. Many of the 10D options are somewhat see through and you can see the down within the baffles of the quilt. You will end up finding this helpful for when you need to redistribute your down. You will be able to see where the pockets of no down are in the baffles which will help you redistribute the down evenly. On the darker 10D colors, all you need to do is hold the quilt up to the light and any problem areas will stand out.
Many customers like to use the colors of their quilt as a tool in emergency situations. They will get a lighter color on one side of their quilt to flag down help in an emergency, and darker colors on the other side to help dry their quilt out when wet, this is mostly just a preference choice. However, if you are worried about your quilt getting wet then getting a darker color is a good idea. The more light the object absorbs, the more heat absorbed since light is energy. If you consider it a color, black absorbs the most heat. A black object absorbs all wavelengths of light and reflects none. Objects that are white, on the other hand, reflect all wavelengths of light and therefore absorb the least heat.
The weather resistant stripes, though do have a functional purpose as talked about in our Fabric article, they also can be used just as a way to look even more awesome! Sure they help keep your footbox and top of your quilt dry from moisture while allowing more breathability in the center of your quilt. But they also allow you to add a 3rd color to your quilt. This could be helpful if you, as an example, want to show pride in your country and they use 3 colors in the flag. Or if you just can't decide between the Orange, Pink, and Yellow colors that we offer. Now you can get all three! So there you have it, some tips and tricks to help your decide your colors. Remember that in the end, the most important thing is that you not only have an awesome lightweight and functional piece of gear, but that it looks great to. Because getting kicked out of your campsite for having ugly gear is a good way to get eaten by bears.
