We get it, accidents happen! Save yourself a headache by bringing along a patch or two from our handy repair kit.
Check out the video to see how, and read on for step-by-step instructions.
Our repair kit comes with 14 pre-cut patches and an uncut 8.5 inch x 10.5 inch sheet of patch material, which you can also trim down to size with scissors or a utility knife.
The patch material is an adhesive-backed polyester cloth. It’s a durable, permanent solution you can use to patch holes on any of our 7D, 10D, or 20D fabrics, or almost any other piece of gear. Just be aware it won't stick to silnylon.
Before you patch your gear, brush or wipe the item you’re repairing to remove dirt and oil, and make sure the fabric is dry. The patch is best applied between 68-90°F, 20-32C. If it's colder, you can still go for it, just use the heat of your hands to warm the adhesive.
Here’s how to patch your gear in 7 easy steps.
- Determine the size and shape of the tear or hole.
- Is it a tear with no fabric actually missing? If so, use a long piece of patch material, or overlap two pieces if the tear is L shaped.
- Is it a hole with the fabric missing (usually due to heat or animal damage)? If so, you’ll want a patch to match the shape of the hole.
- Select the precut patch piece that best matches the hole or cut one to size.
- Cut the patch to have at least ½-1 inch (1.5-2.5 cm) of overlap around the edge of the hole, and round off all sharp corners. The back side of the patch material has a grid print to guide cutting.
- If you’re patching a down quilt, gently push the down further into the hole.
-
Then hold the fabric you’re repairing as flat as possible to place the patch.
- For larger holes, ask another person to hold the fabric taut while you place the patch.
- If it’s a hole with fabric missing, do not try to pull the fabric closed; simply apply the patch directly over the hole.
- If the fabric is melted, you may need to make a few small cuts in the fabric to allow it to lie flat beneath the patch.
- Rub the patch firmly into place, smoothing out all wrinkles and air bubbles.
- If you accidentally stick the patch to the wrong place, try to gently remove it as soon as you can, and repeat steps 4 and 5.
- Smooth all the edges, and check for any places that aren't fully bonded. You'll want to run a fingernail or the side of a credit card firmly over the patch to make sure it's fully bonded.
- Let the patch lie flat overnight while the adhesive bond cures.
-
