Baffles
Baffles are mesh walls used on the interior of down sleep systems and garments that serve to keep the down from shifting and falling. While some other companies use the simpler “sewn-through” construction, our use of baffles gives the down the vertical height needed to allow it to loft up and trap the microscopic air pockets, allowing it to provide full insulation. Baffles also help prevent cold spots from forming where the inner and outer fabric are sewn together.
Our unique U-shaped continuous baffle design combines the strengths of both horizontal and vertical baffles that are typically found in other quilts and sleeping bags. The vertical baffles along the length of the quilt prevent down from falling to the sides, a problem especially for side sleepers. The horizontal baffles at the base of the quilt help keep the footbox fully lofted and limit the amount of down that can shift away from your feet. You can see the U-shape in the photo of the Revelation below.
On our Convert and Conundrum sleeping bags, we use straight vertical baffles. This keeps the down where you need it regardless of whether you're using the product as a quilt or a sleeping bag. Vertical baffles also make it easier to redistribute down, making sure that you’re comfortable in any position.
Our synthetic quilts are built with Climashield APEX insulation. Our APEX quilts don't need baffles, because Climashield APEX is a continuous sheet that won't shift or bunch up. Read more information about the insulation options we offer.
Hardware
Our sleep systems come with several standard hardware features. You can also see comparison of our quilt models at-a-glance here.
- Zippers: We use YKK #3 zippers for our Revelation, Convert, and Conundrum quilts. The Revelation has a 20” zipper along the footbox. The Convert has a full-length zipper, and the Conundrum has an approximately 3/4 length zipper.
- Buckles: We use small center-release buckles on our quilts, bags, and straps so you can easily clip in and out. The buckles have a flat profile for better comfort in your sleep system.
- Snaps: There are two snaps at the top of each sleep system to allow you to close your sleep system around your neck comfortably. On the Revelation and Convert, there is a snap on the bottom of the quilt to help close any remaining gap left from the cinch cord.
- Cinch Cords: There is a static cinch cord at the top and a shock cord cinch at the footbox of the Revelation, Revelation APEX, Convert, and Convert Apex. Each allows you to most effectively close the specific area of the quilt. Our closed-footbox quilts, including the Enigma, Conundrum, and Accomplice, have static cinch cords at the top to eliminate drafts around your neck.
Straps
- Elastic Pad Straps (One Straight, One Loop) - Straps are used to keep the quilt around you and tucked to help prevent drafts. The loop strap goes around your pad and helps keep your quilt on top of you through the night, while the straight strap helps as an extra cinch point. For more information on using pad straps, check out our Pad Straps article.
On and off-trail storage
Each quilt comes with the following items to help you travel, store, and use it effectively.
- Stuff Sack - The stuff sack, while not a compression sack, allows you to easily store your quilt in your pack while you are out on the trail. So some campers like to swap this out for a compression sack instead. Stuff sack dimensions vary based on the quilt model and degree rating.
- Storage Bag - A larger sack that allows your quilt to stay lofted while not in use. We recommend putting your quilt in a dry, temperature-controlled room when not in use. For our storage sacks, we've partnered with FreeSet, a nonprofit that helps provide employment for people affected by oppression and poverty.
